Our Story
Taupo University was founded in 2015 in Taupo by a group of New Zealand educators and engineers who believed that quality higher education should be accessible to the young generation of New Zealand. The university began with a single faculty, 180 students, and one rented building in the Lake Terrace area of Taupo.
From the very first year, our focus has been practical: computer science, information technology, and business education that prepares graduates for real jobs. Over the past decade the university has grown to six academic programs, a permanent campus building, and more than 1,200 enrolled students.

Knowledge is Light — inspired by the Māori proverb Mā te mātauranga te māramatanga, we believe education is the light that guides both the individual and the nation.
Our Campus
Taupo University is located in Lake Terrace, District 6, Taupo. The campus includes lecture halls, a computer laboratory with modern equipment, a library, and administrative offices.
Timeline
- 2015 — Taupo University is founded; first cohort of 180 students admitted.
- 2017 — Faculty of Business Administration opens.
- 2019 — New academic building and computer laboratory completed.
- 2021 — Operations temporarily suspended due to national circumstances.
- 2023 — Classes resume; IT programs modernized.
- 2026 — More than 850 graduates have completed their studies since 2019.
